It basically twists off. Once you have it off, remove the powerhead from the "shroud". Twist the "turret" off as well, and this allows you into the powerhead to get the impeller out. BREX

I bought a Marineland Magnum Polishing Internal Canister Filter (ML90770) for my 40 gal. tank in January 2018. It has been making a lot of noise lately. What can be causing this? What can be done about it?

Asked by: Cindi46
Thank you, taking the head apart and cleaning everything did the trick.

Can I use this on a 30 gallon tank or is it too powerful.

Asked by: BlueMatteo
That is going to depend on the fish, and the actual dimensions of this tank, but must likely not. There are different versions of the 30 gallon size, and some will be too shallow for this filter. Small fish would be blown all over the tank, but large cichlids or goldfish may be okay. BREX

What’s the difference between the water polishin filter and the two stage carbon filter?  They both come in the box, but what are the differences?

Asked by: Shant Z
The polishing filter is to be used alone, and it polishes the water by removing tiny particles that other types of media miss because they float right through those media. Carbon is a chemical media and it removes odors and discolorations from the water such as medication. The filter sleeve is your day to day filter pad and it removed the majority of debris, but the tiny particles float through it. Use the micron cartridge temporarily when you want crystal clear water or to remove tannins, algae, etc, from the water. BREX

When I tried using diatom powder, I had the filter in bucket of dechorlinated water, and added 6 tablespoons of powder. It did not seem as if the filter was taking in the powder as the water remained very cloudy{in the bucket}.

Asked by: David 22554
In order to use DE powder you need to have the micron cartridge in the canister and completely submerge the canister until it pulls all of the DE into it. BREX

Want to build a waterfall type filtration similar to the vivarium but more powerful. Can i use your filter and have the outflow as waterfall. I have a 40 breeder and two smaller semi-aquatic turtles. Can it be partially submerged for this?

Asked by: JacyPo72
You would need to have the tank full to about the base of the powerhead portion of the filter system for it to work. It would be better to buy just the Maxi Jet 1200 powerhead, and some vinyl tubing. Submerge the powerhead in the bottom of the tank, with tubing coming up and over the falls. You could perhaps have a manifold so that several short pieces of tubing come off the main one, and insert in between rocks, creating the waterfall. BREX

Hello Just set up 2 of these filters why on only one do i have airbubbles coming out of the outletb is still pumping well..Thanks

Asked by: davielock
That should have to do with the way you have them set up, as well as the depth they are installed at in the tank. Also, make sure the tubing and venturi knob are not clogged, and the knob is fully opened. BREX

I currently use a fan internal on a 60 gallon tank along with a Eco-bio stone which works really well, but would like further cleaning of bottom was and cycle. Would this work and what is the best media? Ceramic? Charcoal?

Asked by: Tigger555
This will certainly do a great job filtering, but it doesn't clean the bottom, gravel vacuuming does that. It uses either a micron cartridge or a filter sleeve with carbon in a media container. BREX

What micron size will this filter out.

Asked by: Sfin52
It typically filters out around 50 microns, but can filter out smaller as it clogs. BREX

Can this filter handle a 60 gallon tank. I am getting pretty fed up with my cascade 1500

Asked by: aprilc
That's a loaded question, aprilc! Yes, it is rated for up to 90 gallons and can handle a properly stocked and maintained 60 gallon tank. Emphasis on properly stocked and maintained. I don't know what issues you are experiencing with the Cascade 1500, but if the tank is over stocked or something, you may be requiring a second filter. Just wanted to give a heads up. This filter, however, is easy to install, maintain, etc. BREX

I need an impeller for The Marineland® Magnum® Polishing Internal Canister Filter. I don't see one listed in your parts catalog. I've only had the Magnum for about a month. I ordered two impellers that were the wrong part number.Order# MLW4740744-468.

Mine quit expelling water.  Just sits there and makes noise.  I cleaned it, changed filter, and changed medium , still nothing but noise

Asked by: Pammoore
Remove the impeller from inside the powerhead, and check it for debris such as hair-like strands. Swab out the powerhead with a q tip and some white vinegar. If you tend to have hard water, soak the impeller for about 10 minutes in vinegar. Call 1-800-322-1266 for more help. BREX

The rubber caps that are on each end of the impeller, only come with the impeller, not by themselves. This powerhead is the same as the Maxijet 1200 Pro, and takes the same parts. Call 1-800-322-1266 for additional help. BREX

After 6 or so months one got noisy and flow dropped. Figured it was time to try an impeller assembly change, but don't see a part listed under ML90770. The head on this canister shows the part number MJ1200, it that the correct impeller?

Asked by: Nels
You may just need to soak the impeller in white vinegar, and swab out the powerhead with vinegar as well. If you do need the impeller, it is the same one as the one for the Maxi jet Pro 1200 powerhead. BREX

Can this filter be used with an external motor control? I'd like to be able to reduce the flow at times so it's not quite some traumatic for the fish.

Asked by: BSchulte
No, we wouldn't recommend using it in that way as it could damage the motor. BREX

How do I clean or replace the impeller. there are no instructions for this.

Asked by: Hodoe
Once you have removed the filter from the tank, twist off the shroud (part #5) and the powerhead. You will need to remove the turret (part #3) as well, then pull the impeller out, clean it and inside the powerhead. Once clean, reinsert it, magnet first, then twist the turret back on, place it back in the shroud, line them up with the canister vessel, and twist it back on. If you need additional help, please call 1-800-322-1266. BREX

My filter keeps losing flow and I’m not sure why. any suggestions as to why it seems to keep losing flow power?  I am using it as a polishing filter.

Asked by: KdW79
Most likely it is becoming clogged, especially if you are using the polishing filter. That clogs fast because it removes very tiny particles as well as large ones, and it needs to be recharged frequently. See instructions on how to do this. BREX

Can this filter be used in a 20 gallon fresh water aquarium? I currently use the Marineland Penquin Rite Size B Power filter that came with the tank. I'm having cloudy water problems & I'm having to replace the filter every week, but still cloudy.

Asked by: Pattilucy
It would be a bit too large. Cloudy water has various causes, so you need to determine what is causing yours. It is rarely the filter. Cycling through the New Tank Syndrome, organic protein, copepods, heterotrophic bacteria, over feeding, over stocking, etc. Instead of replacing the filter, try vacuuming the gravel and changing 4-5 gallons of water. If the filter cartridge is clogged, this is a sign of too much food or too many fish in the tank so cut back accordingly. Also, add Marineland Bio Spira to boost your biological filter. Last, but not least, there are some good organic adsorbent products on the market you can add to your filter to help out with this issue. BREX

I might use it for a turtle tank, but she doesn’t like a lot of water so I might put it sideways. Is this okay? I’ve heard a lot about that if it’s underwater it should work, but just in case do you have any tips?

Asked by: Kodyg
As long as it is underwater and is vertical. If by sideways you mean horizontal, no, we have not tested it in that application. The outlet diffuser is adjustable so you can adjust the direction of the flow which may help with your turtle. I've used it with an adult Eastern Painted Turtle and she was fine with it. BREX

Bought the internal canister filter 1yr ago. It worked great the 1st 6 months then it stopped cleaning the water. I've purchased new blue sleeves & new poishing cartridges but to no avail. The water looks muddy. Any suggestions? What do I need to do now?

Asked by: LadyTona
If you are not doing partial water changes, it is in desperate need of a good vacuuming and partial water change. Every tank needs these in addition to filtration, usually at least once a month. The discolored water could also be due to any number of other reasons, such as the breakdown of driftwood if you have some in the tank. There is not enough information provided to be able to assist you fully. BREX

The extension tube with flow diverter wouldn't stay on the outlet tube on the turret. The moment the water jet comes out, the extension tube get pushed right out. what am I missing here?

Asked by: ph8886
It should snap on. There is a small hole in the diffuser that goes over a very small nub on the tube. Make sure you are connecting them correctly. BREX
