Emperor® Power Filter Systems are advanced aquarium technology at its finest. With a revolutionary design, the Emperor’s flow and filtration efficiencies are unmatched by other filters in their class.

Featuring as much as twice the filter cartridge capacity, additional chemical filtration capability, and extra large, spray bar-driven BIO-Wheel wet/dry biological filtration, Emperor Filter systems offer aquarists a filtration system that can stand up to any aquarium they can dream of.

Emperor® Power Filters is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good for secondary filtration As a primary you’ll find to be less thorough than a canister. A canister provides for biological filtration and this HOB is perfect for mechanical. Easy access for maintenance. Quieter than most. Must change pads periodically bc of how good the mechanical filtration is. That being said if you use two for a 55 gal or above it’s 4 out of 5. If you use it to supplement a canister than again it’s 4 out of 5. If used by itself, only do it if you fish are low maintenance, not very messy and the tank is moderately to low stock. Don’t do if the tank is heavily stocked. 4 star imho.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Marineland, Emperor, Eclipse System, and Penguin The ideal filter for me would be: 1. A filter that offers Mechanical, Chemical, and Biological Filtration. 2. Relatively inexpensive. 3. Easy to clean. 4. A filter that will last a long time. There are two main filter systems on the market that have been doing this for years. Both are owned by larger companies. While I like the competition's filter using a sponge to do the Biological Filtration, the Marineland Design, Emperor Power Filters, I have found to be the best due to the ease of cleaning. One does not have to take out the sponge to clean it every time they replace the filter cartridge, just leave the Bio-Wheel in. This technology is the best, and I bought my Eclipse 2 System around 1997.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from BUT A MILLION STARS FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE Unfortunately, I think I received a faulty product. I called the 1-800 number to see what my options were since I purchased it off Amazon. An actual human lady picked up the phone after like 2 rings! NO PROMPTS! I explained my issues and that I didn't know what to do and *BAM!* without even submitting any receipts or serial numbers she is sending me an ENTIRE NEW UNIT. I was shocked. My LFS highly recommended these filters as they only use the Emperor 400s on all of their tanks, my son has 2 that are at least 10 years old and his fish are awesome. I really, really hope I just received a faulty one because if this new one works, I will buy everything from now on from Marineland. And the human lady's name is Sara and she ROCKS. Thank you!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Better filters out there We have 4 up and running as backup filters. They are high maintenance, loud, and we replace parts more than anything else. It seems like we are doing something to each filter once a week. I had really great hopes, but when these finally die, we will not be replacing them.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Filters quickly..........however We bought our first Emperor 400 in 1999 and replaced it after about 14 years because it kept getting louder and louder even though we took it apart and cleaned it well. The new filter (same kind) is now just as noisy as it's predecessor! We have performed all of the maintenance suggestions on this site, but it has not stopped the noise. It sounds like my coffee maker when it is gurgles at the end of the brewing cycle. We highly recommended this filter to friends when we purchased the first one - however, I would hesitate doing so now

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Progressively louder I have had this filter for 8 months and it has gotten louder and louder in the past 2 months, I have never used it dry and I have cleaned it regularly I have not been too impressed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Amazing water flow and power VERY HIGH maintenance needs cleaned 2 times a week if you want the filter to last longer then 2 weeks cheaply made sadly but very effective if you keep it looking brand new. when you clean it, be careful when removing the intake from the top. PUSH DOWN on the square middle black piece the intake pipe goes into whiling SLOWLY pulling the intake pipe out. ALSO if you have a sand bottom tank DO NOT USE THIS FILTER sand will get into the intake and completely destroy your filter. id advise anyone to buy the canister filter or any exterior sump pump. hope this helps

I have had this filter for about 9 months, one of the bio wheels moves and the other does not. It is placed evenly and I rotated it with the one that works and there is no change, water is still flowing but the wheel doesn't move. Everything is cleaned.

Asked by: aadamski
Make sure you have cleaned the motor, bottom of the filter box, impeller and intake tube with distilled white vinegar. Check the bio wheel bearings to make sure they are there, properly seated, and clean. Place a thin smear of silicone lubricant on the bearings. If it still won't turn you may have a warped bio wheel. If you have your original receipt, call 1-800-322-1266 regarding warranty options. If you do not, we do sell the bio wheel separately through stores, our site, and online vendors. BREX

The spray bars in my Emperor 400 no longer work. If I empty the intake tube and then start the unit, water flows to the sprayer bars. Once the intake tube and unit are full, water stops flowing to the sprayer bars.

Asked by: MickeyZ
Make sure your flow manifold housing cover is snapped into place at the bottom of the manifold. BREX

Can this be used for a large (50 gal.) turtle tank? I've seen other distributors of this product says it's used for fish only.

Asked by: sheilacats
It would do a great job of cleaning, but the issue is the water has to be within a couple of inches of the top of the tank in order for this filter to pull water up, so it will work on tanks that utilize the Turtle Topper, but in turtle tanks where the water is kept really low, no, it will not work. How wide of tank edge can the penguin 400 fit?

Asked by: Ccccccc
We do not make a Penguin 400, that would be the Emperor 400 and the widest edge would be just under 1.25". BREX

my spray bars are not working after cleaning. no water flow to make them spin

Asked by: Tomuhyhy7776
The spray bars don't spin, the bio wheels do. You either left out the flow manifold cover, or didn't snap it back into place properly. BREX

How long is the intake tube , can it be modified to accommodate shorter tanks, such as breeder 40 and 20 long opposed to a 55 gallon or such? In the overview where are the dimensions of the pieced product? emperor 400.

Asked by: jmag
The overall dimensions of the filter are 17 X 7 X 10.5. The extension tube will extend it down over a foot. However, you can use it with just the intake tube and the bottom strainer, leaving out the two middle pieces. It is going to be extremely powerful for a 20 gallon tank, and the fish may not be able to handle the flow. BREX

My spray bar works when the filter is turned on but then ceases to spray after a few minutes, even after cleaning. Does this mean it is not working properly or is it normal? Even if it’s not proper is it still filtering?

Asked by: Erich1234
This means that your flow manifold housing cover, the part that locks the impeller into the manifold housing, is missing or loose, etc. BREX
