Rated 5 out of 5 by from Penguin longevity I have a Penguin 300 which i bought around 30years ago and it has just given up today, i cannot find any aquarium shop here in Australia who stocks them, can you give me a contact Number or agent to contact as i desperately need to replace it. On past performance i cannot go past this filter and highly recommend them to anyone considering purchasing one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Support Saved Lives My Penguin Bio 350 developed an intermit grinding sound after 6 months that caused my Rabbit to thump so loud that the neighbors called 911, shots fired. After all measures failed, I called Customer support with new no-charge empeller assembly. Results: Rabbit and Fish are out of Therapy. Family has moved back in. Roy

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid filter I have been using this filter for years now. Unfortunately it has become very loud still works perfectly however the noise is extremely annoying. I would like to buy another one to replace the current noise box but I can't seem to find an emperor 280 anywhere for sale. Other than having noise after years of use I still want another one because there isn't another hang on power filter that works as well as this one great overall design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from still think its the best filter for the money i read a lot of the reviews about these filter and its unfortunate that some people have issues with it. i have used mainland products for my aquariums through the 30 plus years I have had aquariums and the emperor and penguin as well as the magnums and have had great success with all of them. i have 4 emperors running split between two 65 gallon aquariums they are quiet both are in my bedroom all i hear is the water moving. These filters are easy to maintain as well. i utilize the reusable media containers

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great filter I'm running these filters on 7 tanks. To make these filters perfect they need to be quiter and have rinseable filters that don't plug up so fast.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible! I have had this filter now for three weeks. I have 150 gallon tank with two turtles. It worked great the first week. Then it stopped sucking up water. I have cleaned the entire filter checked the intake valve and propeller and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. I have no idea why it's not working. I still have to manually clean my turtle tank out every week to keep it clean. Was not worth the money I spent. Returning it today.

The spray tube for the biowheel does not stay snuggly attached to the side where the water comes into it. The water travels outside the tube and down it to drip off side onto floor. What can I do to fix this? I dont have this problem with my double wheel

Asked by: StacyR
There is an o ring that fits onto the end of the spray bar. Check to make sure this is in place properly, and not pinched or damaged. Please reach out to us at 1-800-322-1266 if you need a replacement o ring. BREX

I have had an Emperor Power Filter 400 for about 8 months. Recently, I was having issue with the water flow and the system making some noise. I cleaned everything and water flow improved greatly , but I still have the noise. What else should I try?

Asked by: timva319
Depends on what type of noise you are hearing, and what your set up is like. Try soaking the impeller in distilled white vinegar, and swabbing out the motor with a twisted paper towel and vinegar as well. Run a wire brush through the intake tube, and check to make sure the flow manifold cover connects properly to the housing. BREX

Would it be beneficial to fill the large sumps on the back of the filters with bio media like ceramic rings or something else? There is so much space in these sumps. But, the media will basically be submerged in water all time. I have 2 on my 60gal.

Asked by: Dbro69
Thank you sir for your answer. My thinking is that there is so much sump space in these filters and filling them up seems like a no-brainer. I am running one biowheel on each filter and one rite size E cartridge on each. And filled up one xtra cartridge on each filter with ceramic media. They flow so much water and that's what I like. But just want to use these as best as they can befor now. Had one that was really noisey after the move, but put some vasaline on the impeller and it is acceptably quiet

the spray bar is not working on my 400. just cleaned it and hooked it up. no water is getting to the bars. the water is flowing very good. any suggestions

Asked by: hollywood22
This means your flow manifold cover was not put back in place. You probably left it out. It is a "tear drop" shaped piece about 2" in length that snaps over the impeller onto the bottom of the flow manifold housing itself. BREX

I have one and it will not work anymore

Asked by: Tom Gosorn
We are sorry to hear this Tom! If you haven't already done so, remove the intake tube, and the flow manifold housing. Using distilled white vinegar, thoroughly clean the intake tube, impeller, and bottom of the filter box. Take a q tip or soak the corner of a paper towel with vinegar, and clean out the well of the motor in the center of the bottom of the filter box. You may have some mineral or other build up preventing the impeller from turning properly. Your unit has a 5 year warranty, so if you are unable to resolve this issue, simply give us a call. BREX

Can I use emperor 400 w/ a sand bed tank? Will it clog it and cause problems?

Asked by: nora
Excellent question! Sand will clog ANY filter if precautions are not taken. You can use the Emperor 400 with sand, but be sure to not allow the intake tube to be any lower than 1/2 way down in the water, and fill the bottom and mid-level strainers with some filter floss. There are also strainer pre-filters on the market that you can slip over them as well. BREX
