Rated 3 out of 5 by from Been using for years I’ve bought these filters for years but now rethinking. After a couple years (2) I’ve been having to replace the impellers after 6 months on 3 of them. It’s already starting to wear out the rubber like ends. Also the bio wheels quit spinning, bought replacements and they just don’t spin. Replacement parts are speedy hence rethinking buying more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Emperor 400 The only reason I have had to replace this filter is due in fact to the many power outages in my area, other than that, it's the best pump I've ever had, I use two of them on my 125 gallon aquarium, no problems at all otherwise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Efficient and quiet and great customer service I bought my filter almost a year ago and it worked great....it did begin to be noisy though so I wrote Marineland for advice. They just sent me a new pump. Great customer service. I was problem shooting but they replaced it fast!!!! Good job!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Service when help needed! I have had a series of these filters which last for 5 to 6 years and by then somethings wear out and I buy a new one. My more recent filter was fine except it would stop pumping water to the bio wheels unpredictably. I thought maybe the fit for the impeller was a bit tight. Anyway I asked for help and got a very quick response saying you need this and this which they mailed out gratis. I installed the new parts and my filter is working as I expect it too. What a great company!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from never quit I've had this filter over ten years at least, a few parts fatigued over the years but nothing a twist tie couldn't fix. Paws now petco, gave me their spare pieces, (plastic spray tubes, clips) from old filters they didn't use. I'm about to finally get a replacement. Mine is STILL working, just so much salt buildup , little broken parts etc, and reduced water flow Warrent it. Again it's well over over ten years old. My best guess is 2004, it's 17 now. Great dual bio wheel system.

I have a 20 gallon heated, lightly planted glass aquarium with one betta. What filter would you recommend? Also, would a UV sterilizer be ok to use in the tank? Thanks!

Asked by: Amy101
We would recommend the Penguin 150 for this tank, and yes, a UV sterilizer would be fine, but not very necessary for a tank with very little fish load. Your betta would love some companions such as white clouds, corydoras catfish and nerite snails. BREX

how can i get the filter in filter box, filter seems too big for box

Asked by: who cares
The filter cartridges slides into the filter box, not the media container. There are slots it slides into, and the black plastic faces the front with the floss towards the back. If there is excess floss, you can fold or trim it. BREX

I have 120 gal tank and it came with2 emperor 400. But no bio wheel. I bought a new one, With extension the bottom is about 3in away from the sand in bottom. IS this too close for it to work?? it wasnt working but did n smaller tank that i didnt use exts

Asked by: ashley95
Yes, when sand is in use, we recommend the intake tube not being more than halfway down in the tank. Also, it is a good idea to place filter floss inside the bottom strainer or use a sponge accessory purchased separately, to cover the strainer. BREX

Is anyone at Marineland working on making the emperor 400 filters quieter. I have one on my 55 gal tank for 8 years and the filtration is great but it's not quiet. I bought a new impeller and it was quieter but not quiet. Now it's loud again.

Asked by: MikeFitz
We changed the impeller about 2.5 years ago and this made the filter silent. However, if you have the old style Emperor with the new impeller, you also need the flow manifold cover to make sure it stays quiet. The impeller and manifold cover are sold together. BREX

Used two Emperor 400 filters on my 90 gallon tank for over ten years with excellent results. Recently replaced one but was very disappointed to find there is no way to reduce the flow rate without completely shutting the filter off. Is there a way?

Asked by: RudeGoose12
No, not other than closing the mid-level strainer. That change occurred back in 2002-2003. BREX

Would I be able to put a Emperor 400 pro series on a 30 gallon tank ? What I thought is maybe bigger filter for smaller tank better filtration ?

Asked by: Aaronvidal
No, it would be way too big for a 30 gallon most likely. It would depend on the type of fish and you would need to leave off the mid-level strainer and extension. Just attach the bottom strainer to the intake tube, but it would probably be too powerful. We would normally recommend the Penguin 200 for that size, instead, if you wanted a larger filter. BREX
