Rated 5 out of 5 by from love my 280 when i was still young to aquariums, i had many issues with trying to find the right filters and an overall good brand to use. I had been using a fluval 70 on my fancy goldfish tank but the filter was unreliable and hard to clean. When i was starting my malawi mbuna tank i bought an emperor 280, and from the start i loved it. when i was constructing it i loved how versatile it could be with all the things you could add to it. Also i am very impressed with the bio wheel technology, very innovative. i also added a 36'' led light on that tank and it looks incredible. currently I'm setting up a planted angel tank and for everything I'm using marineland

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the Best I have been using the 400 for years. I run two on each of my 90gal and two 55gal tanks. All three are freshwater tanks and the water quality is great in all of them. I have four mated pairs of Angel fish and have raised hundreds of baby Angels. For me and the money, you can not beat the 400.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cleans like a champ! I was having no success in getting my canister filter positioned correctly so it wouldn't leak. Went to Tropical Fish Haven in Corpus Christi (been there 50 years) and was recommended to use the Emperor 400. WOW! Not only is it easy to set up but it filters my tank perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent filtration, fast bio set up with bio whe Was having trouble setting up a aquarium with nitrite and ammonia, until I put the 400 on it. The bio wheel seems to work very effectively, compared to other filters

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great but Purchased a few weeks ago as secondary on my 72 gallon African Cichlid tank work great I'm turning the tank approx 10 times an hour , 2 improvements to take this filter to a great level . 1 cleanable mechanical filter pads ( I'm burning through them. 2 needs a strap style handle to lift & remove filter from tank ,it's impossible to remove full of water to do maintenance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter I am using one of these filters on my 27gallon cube tank. It's very quite and is keeping the tank very clean. I like the bio wheel. It really helps if you don't have live plants in your tank or are just getting your tank established. I recommended this filter system to uncle who has a 55 gallon and it is keeping his tank clear as well.

400b has long in take tube , why does the water have to have to be so high in the tank to pump the water? I have a 75 gallon long I have cichlids in it keep the water 3/4 full the pump will not pull the water up , it makes a churning sound!

Asked by: tommymc
It has to do with pressure. It is not a sealed system, and all connections have to be fully covered. It should pull the water as long as the last connection has water over it by at least a couple of inches, but that would definitely be more than 3/4 full.BREX

I have a 60 gal acrylic tank.  Will the Emperor 400 slide into the opening on the top of the fish tank that is 14 3/4" x 1 3/4", and 5/8" from the edge?  (It would be much easier if I could send you a drawing).  Or can you send me a drawing?

Asked by: Roy123
Good morning,Thank you for your inquiry. The total dimensions of the filter are 17"x7"x10.5" overall and the out of tank dimensions are 17"x4.5"x10.5". Therefore the filter will need 17" of length, 3.5" of width on the inside of the tank to accomodate where it would be hanging inside of the aquarium.MINI

How long are parts going to be available for the 280? Or is everything {impellers, bio wheels etc} the same as on the 400?? Very sad news that the 280 is no longer available :(

Asked by: Stevesweetcorn
For a few years. The only parts that are different are the impellers, flow manifold housings, covers, and filter box. Everything else is the same. Bio wheels, intake tubes, strainers, flow manifold covers, etc, are all the same.BREX

I cannot see anyone carrying the emperor 280 anymore? I own 4 of these and some are getting to be 8 years old and need replacing. My tanks cannot fit the 400? Did you stop making the 280???

Asked by: Stevesweetcorn
Yes, we did discontinue the Emperor 280. It was not a big seller, unfortunately.BREX

Does anybody else have a problem with the tube killing there fish, cuz mine is! What do I do please!?!??

Asked by: Cfish
No, the intake tube does not kill the fish, the fish become sick, stressed or die due to something such as water quality, and then the current pulls them to the intake tube, where they become stuck. This happens in new tanks in particular, when a new hobbyist adds fish too quickly and causes an ammonia spike, for example. It can also happen when the fish become ill, but don't show any obvious symptoms so the hobbyist is unaware of the illness. There are a lot of parasites, protozoa, bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc, that attack fish. I would first recommend testing the water for pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and alkalinity. Then do a partial water change of 30%, add in water conditioner, and Tetra SafeStart Plus to help boost your biological filter. Call us if you have any additional questions, 1-800-322-1266.

My filter is running slow. Not sucking like it should what can I do? Also it's making priming sounds. I've tried adding water to it but can't right it's self

Asked by: Shell29
Either your tank water level is too low, or you need to clean your filter system. The water level should be to the bottom of the top frame. To clean it, unplug it, remove it from the tank, pull the spray bars out of the flow manifold, then pull the flow manifold up to bring out the impeller assembly. Clean everything thoroughly, especially the impeller and the bottom of the filter box where the impeller sits.BREX
