Rated 5 out of 5 by from love my 280 when i was still young to aquariums, i had many issues with trying to find the right filters and an overall good brand to use. I had been using a fluval 70 on my fancy goldfish tank but the filter was unreliable and hard to clean. When i was starting my malawi mbuna tank i bought an emperor 280, and from the start i loved it. when i was constructing it i loved how versatile it could be with all the things you could add to it. Also i am very impressed with the bio wheel technology, very innovative. i also added a 36'' led light on that tank and it looks incredible. currently I'm setting up a planted angel tank and for everything I'm using marineland

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the Best I have been using the 400 for years. I run two on each of my 90gal and two 55gal tanks. All three are freshwater tanks and the water quality is great in all of them. I have four mated pairs of Angel fish and have raised hundreds of baby Angels. For me and the money, you can not beat the 400.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cleans like a champ! I was having no success in getting my canister filter positioned correctly so it wouldn't leak. Went to Tropical Fish Haven in Corpus Christi (been there 50 years) and was recommended to use the Emperor 400. WOW! Not only is it easy to set up but it filters my tank perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent filtration, fast bio set up with bio whe Was having trouble setting up a aquarium with nitrite and ammonia, until I put the 400 on it. The bio wheel seems to work very effectively, compared to other filters

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great but Purchased a few weeks ago as secondary on my 72 gallon African Cichlid tank work great I'm turning the tank approx 10 times an hour , 2 improvements to take this filter to a great level . 1 cleanable mechanical filter pads ( I'm burning through them. 2 needs a strap style handle to lift & remove filter from tank ,it's impossible to remove full of water to do maintenance.

I have an elderly Emperor 400. It now struggles and makes noises after any power outage or flicker. I have to raise the impeller unit by hand and hold it up until it functions properly. This can take ages. Do I need to replace a part? Suggestions?

Asked by: Sajshore
If you have not already done so, soak the impeller in distilled white vinegar for about 15-30 minutes. While it is soaking, swab out the little reservoir it resides in with vinegar as well. The water level in your tank should always be near the top or it will struggle to pull water. If even after vinegar, it continues to struggle, you may need a new impeller.BREX

My filter just stopped and the motor felt hot. Does it need time to cool down? I have the filter from the 20 gallon kit and it is being used with the 20 gallon tank along with a 10 gallon filter. Is there a warranty for that or am I out of luck here?

Asked by: Espana1029
Well, you don't have an Emperor filter as in the link, if your filter is rated for a 20 gallon tank. The Emperor is for up to 90 gallons. Whichever filter you own, it became hot because something interfered with the impeller and caused the filter to stop, thereby creating a lack of water running through the motor. With no water movement, the motor warms up a bit. This is an issue of maintenance. The filter system needs to be taken apart and cleaned, especially the impeller and the motor region. Once it is cleaned, it will operate again. It is recommended to take a filter system apart once every month or two and clean it. The warranty on the unit would be two years, and we can use either a receipt or the lot code on the unit to verify warranty, just give us a call direct if you are unable to resolve the issue with just cleaning the filter system. 1-800-526-0650BREX

Is this filter adequate for a 55 gal saltwater aquarium?

Asked by: jha1997
Yes indeed as it has the bio wheels, regular cartridges, and media containers that you can put whatever media you want in as well. The containers would be ideal for more bio media such as bio beads.Just keep in mind you will need to remove salt and Ca deposits approximately every month or two.BREX
