Rated 5 out of 5 by from 9 Years & Still Filtering! I have used this filter for a 75 gal. aquarium for 9 years! It has run 24/7 all that time with short period outages due to power failures and cleanings. The only part replaced was the impeller. (replacement made it more efficient and quieter)I ordered a new Emperor 400--after all, 9 years is a long life.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good filter just need added filtering I have bought this filter to work with my freshwater tank and love the filter for the quiet operation and the flow is great. After adding some fish I made the mistake of dropping the fish into the tank with the water from the store that I bought the fish from and now the tank has a small cloud in it (I will never do this again) I have attempted to look for a micron filter to put in the 400 to help clear up the water and I have not found one. I think this would be a great addition for this filter. other then ant being able to use this filter to clear up the water it is a great filter so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Emperor and Penguin only for me from now on Just got back into the hobby last year after about 20 years.Started with a 65 running Emperor 400. Loved how quickly I cycled the tank and how clear the water is. Second tank was a 40 breeder so I looked for an Emperor 280 to be able to use same Rite-Size E filter. Apparently the 280 is sadly discontinued. I remembered some other brands from the past so I picked one up. Long story short I'm replacing that ineffective filter today after about 6 months of cloudy water. I now have a 20 long, a 60 gallon, a 20 high and the first 65 all on Emperors or Penguins and they all are crystal clear and trouble free. The 40 breeder will have a Penguin today. Only gripe is that the Emperor 280 is no longer available.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Support Saved Lives My Penguin Bio 350 developed an intermit grinding sound after 6 months that caused my Rabbit to thump so loud that the neighbors called 911, shots fired. After all measures failed, I called Customer support with new no-charge empeller assembly. Results: Rabbit and Fish are out of Therapy. Family has moved back in. Roy

i had a emperor 400 and it broke so replaced it with the same type and model but ever since replacing it the tank water has been cloudy. i have changed it once a week prior to all this and tank would be crystal clear. now it never is clear. this is not

If you did not use the old filter media, and any working parts, this filter is needing to build up its own biological filter. Replacing a filter system with a new one can often throw your biological filter within the tank out of whack. I would recommend adding ML Freshwater Bio Spira to boost your filter. You could also use Tetra SafeStart Plus or Instant Ocean Bio Spira. BREX

Does the Marineland Emperor 400 have an intake extension available. What is the length of the standard lift tube?

Asked by: Mike65
Yes, it does, see here: http://www.marineland.com/Products/aquarium-parts/Filtration-Products-and-Skimmers/Emperor-Parts/Intake-Tube-Extension-for-Emperor-PF280B-PF400B.aspx. I'm not sure if you want just the lift tube, or the tube with the strainers and the extension, but altogether is close to 18" down into the tank. BREX

I have had an Emperor 280 and 400 in storage for about 7 years, that I am preparing to put back into service. I also have several unused carbon filter cartridges. Will the filter cartridges and BioWheels work if they've been stored for years?

Asked by: jclemens
Yes, they should work fine, if they were stored properly. If the bio wheels have warped or become damp, they may not fit correctly. The carbon may not be as effective, but it will not harm anything. Check your impellers. When filters are stored like this, impellers may separate and not work. We do sell them separately if you have that issue. BREX

What size filter should I use for my 55 gallon hexagon tank

Asked by: Jasperkitty
Thanks for asking, Jasperkitty. Most filters will list the size of tanks they are rated for. You will want to research the types of filters, hang on back (HOB), internal, or canister based on what you want to do with the tank. A good HOB filter for that size is the Penguin 300. We're always happy to discuss further at 1-800-526-0650.

After taking a break from the hobby for a few years, i dug out 2 new emporer 400 filters. both of them have an irritating grinding/vibrating noise from the bottom of the impellar. your customer rep. told me i needed to wait 2 weeks for break in?

Asked by: Andrew207
New Emperor filters do not need to break the impellers in, although the bio wheels should be floated for a day or so to absorb water, and quiet the water noise down. For grinding and vibrating, remove the flow manifold housing, and separate the impeller assembly from it then re-attach them as they may not be connected properly. Additionally, you mentioned you "dug out" two new filters, not that you bought two new filters. If these are filters that were bought new a few years back, and have been stored, the rubber tips at each end of the impeller may have dry rotted over time, causing them to spin incorrectly and you may need to purchase new impellers.
