Rated 3 out of 5 by from Amazing water flow and power VERY HIGH maintenance needs cleaned 2 times a week if you want the filter to last longer then 2 weeks cheaply made sadly but very effective if you keep it looking brand new. when you clean it, be careful when removing the intake from the top. PUSH DOWN on the square middle black piece the intake pipe goes into whiling SLOWLY pulling the intake pipe out. ALSO if you have a sand bottom tank DO NOT USE THIS FILTER sand will get into the intake and completely destroy your filter. id advise anyone to buy the canister filter or any exterior sump pump. hope this helps

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I wish I could get my hands on a 280gpm I've got 2 of the 400s on my 75G tank, work great low maintenance. My only complaint is I've got a smaller tank 40G that the 400 will not fit on but the 280 would, but I can't find in store or online that ships to Canada.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Noise I've had the filter for a few year & it works fine. The problem I'm having now is that it has gotten very loud/noisey. I replaced the impeller, but the noise continues. It appears the bottom piece that goes around the impeller is loos e & falls off & I think this is making the racket. Can this be replaced with an oversized piece to prevent it from drpping off & hopefully cure the problem?

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Marineland Power Filters I’ve bought these filters for years but now rethinking. After a couple years (2) I’ve been having to replace the impellers. It’s already starting to wear out the rubber like ends. Also the bio wheels quit spinning and they just don’t spin. Replacement parts are available hence rethinking buying more. The last filter I bought lasted for many years with out much maintenance.I moved from Virginia to Utah and bought all new equipment, not sure if that is a factor.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Did not last as long as I would have liked I have had to replace the impeller multiple times. Other than that it has worked perfectly until recently. After a little more than a year of having it it has stopped working and will not even try to start up again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Been using for years I’ve bought these filters for years but now rethinking. After a couple years (2) I’ve been having to replace the impellers after 6 months on 3 of them. It’s already starting to wear out the rubber like ends. Also the bio wheels quit spinning, bought replacements and they just don’t spin. Replacement parts are speedy hence rethinking buying more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Emperor 400 The only reason I have had to replace this filter is due in fact to the many power outages in my area, other than that, it's the best pump I've ever had, I use two of them on my 125 gallon aquarium, no problems at all otherwise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Efficient and quiet and great customer service I bought my filter almost a year ago and it worked great....it did begin to be noisy though so I wrote Marineland for advice. They just sent me a new pump. Great customer service. I was problem shooting but they replaced it fast!!!! Good job!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Service when help needed! I have had a series of these filters which last for 5 to 6 years and by then somethings wear out and I buy a new one. My more recent filter was fine except it would stop pumping water to the bio wheels unpredictably. I thought maybe the fit for the impeller was a bit tight. Anyway I asked for help and got a very quick response saying you need this and this which they mailed out gratis. I installed the new parts and my filter is working as I expect it too. What a great company!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from never quit I've had this filter over ten years at least, a few parts fatigued over the years but nothing a twist tie couldn't fix. Paws now petco, gave me their spare pieces, (plastic spray tubes, clips) from old filters they didn't use. I'm about to finally get a replacement. Mine is STILL working, just so much salt buildup , little broken parts etc, and reduced water flow Warrent it. Again it's well over over ten years old. My best guess is 2004, it's 17 now. Great dual bio wheel system.

How wide of tank edge can the penguin 400 fit?

Asked by: Ccccccc
We do not make a Penguin 400, that would be the Emperor 400 and the widest edge would be just under 1.25". BREX

my spray bars are not working after cleaning. no water flow to make them spin

Asked by: Tomuhyhy7776
The spray bars don't spin, the bio wheels do. You either left out the flow manifold cover, or didn't snap it back into place properly. BREX

How long is the intake tube , can it be modified to accommodate shorter tanks, such as breeder 40 and 20 long opposed to a 55 gallon or such? In the overview where are the dimensions of the pieced product? emperor 400.

Asked by: jmag
The overall dimensions of the filter are 17 X 7 X 10.5. The extension tube will extend it down over a foot. However, you can use it with just the intake tube and the bottom strainer, leaving out the two middle pieces. It is going to be extremely powerful for a 20 gallon tank, and the fish may not be able to handle the flow. BREX

My spray bar works when the filter is turned on but then ceases to spray after a few minutes, even after cleaning. Does this mean it is not working properly or is it normal? Even if it’s not proper is it still filtering?

Asked by: Erich1234
This means that your flow manifold housing cover, the part that locks the impeller into the manifold housing, is missing or loose, etc. BREX

What size filter do I need for about a 60 gallon tank?

Emperor 400 on a standard 20 gal tank.  Stocked with shrimp and espei. Not overstocked. Is this too much filtration power for a 20 gal tank? Will the poor espei be over-swimming to stay alive? Will they be exhausted?

Asked by: nxreliant1864
Yes to all of your questions. The shrimp and espei would definitely have a hard time. We wouldn't go more than a Penguin 200, and that may even be too much. BREX

My filter has stopped working, it won’t suck up water anymore.

Asked by: Mikemangosweet
Sorry to hear that, but most likely it needs to be taken apart and cleaned. In particular, pull out the impeller, impeller housing and intake tube. Clean these parts as well as the motor in the middle of the filter box. BREX

I have been using my filter for about 5 years and recently it’s been very loud. It sounds like the pump and impeller are making the noise so I pulled it all out and cleaned everything but It only seemed to help for a couple days. Any suggestions?

Is Marineland going to discontinue the Emperor 400? I've been using Penguin and Emperor filters almost exclusively for as long as I can remember. I've been in the hobby 35 years and have never found a better power filter.

Asked by: Gadgetgirl
Those are sold separately. You basically pull it out and insert the new one. http://www.marineland.com/Products/aquarium-parts/Filtration-Products-and-Skimmers/Emperor-Parts/Spray-Bar-Assembly-Emperors-PF280B-PF400B-PF280BD-PF400BD.aspx. Our filter seems to have quit, We’ve had it less than a year and clean it completely once a month and today I noticed it had just stopped pumping. We have the BIOwheele 350 Penguin model.

Asked by: Skaye
Remove the impeller and impeller housing. Soak the impeller in distilled white vinegar after removing any debris you find. Swab out the motor itself (middle of the bottom of the box) with white vinegar as well. You may have hard water or calcium buildup which can only be removed with vinegar. If this doesn't work, please call 1-800-322-1266. BREX

The carbon I have been using seems to fall to the bottom of the media holder. Is there a larger carbon or am I loading it wrong?

Asked by: Jodi L
There are definitely different types of carbon on the market, ours is Black Diamond. Make sure you are filling the media container completely. If it is ours, lay it flat, and fill each section before snapping it together. BREX

I have a 20 gallon heated, lightly planted glass aquarium with one betta. What filter would you recommend? Also, would a UV sterilizer be ok to use in the tank? Thanks!

Asked by: Amy101
We would recommend the Penguin 150 for this tank, and yes, a UV sterilizer would be fine, but not very necessary for a tank with very little fish load. Your betta would love some companions such as white clouds, corydoras catfish and nerite snails. BREX

The filter cartridges slides into the filter box, not the media container. There are slots it slides into, and the black plastic faces the front with the floss towards the back. If there is excess floss, you can fold or trim it. BREX
