Rated 1 out of 5 by from You will need this to connect together extension t If you are thinking about adding an extension tube to your filter. Be sure to buy this, too! Otherwise, when the extension arrives it will be useless until this “connector is ordered. It would be nice if Marineland would mention that this part is needed or create a “kit” that contains a connector and extension tube.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fit a Bio-Wheel 350 perfectly I bought this (plus an intake extension) to help increase intake flow through my 60 gallon tank and extend the intake of water down to the lower layer of the substrate. It works perfectly and helps keep my tank much clearer than before. I highly recommend spending a little bit of money to help keep your tank healthy

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Idea Flawed Execution As is, the strainer works great if you keep a high water level. The one flaw is if you run a low to mid level water fill in your tank the strainer leaks allowing in air, even if strainer door is closed and at the top and bottom where it connects the intake tubes, By allowing air in it is stopping your filter from working properly creating a low or non-existent water flow to the impeller unless you fill your tank past the top of the strainer. As you are required to use it with the enclosed extension tube and the 350b is made for a larger tank, it should either seal completely when the gray door is closed or consider modifying the tubes so they can connect without the strainer. At least consider making a solid coupler for the intake tubes and mandatory extension tube as having to cover the strainer with sealant or substituting a nonfactory part ruins the visual appeal of an aquarium.

Do we need to be completely closed or wide open or half ways

Asked by: Charlo
That is a personal preference and should be based on your tank's particular needs. Consider how tall the tank is, how many fish you have in it, and so forth. If you feel you need more circulation, then leave it completely open, if you do not, you can close it. My own personal preference is leaving it open. BREX

I just set up a 65 gallon tank and have this filter, works great. Should the strainer be closed or open? What is it's purpose? Does it aid in filtering if open? Thanks

Asked by: K9 Lover
It allows flow regulation to some degree, and increases circulation throughout the tank. By pulling water at both mid- and bottom levels, you are moving water at all levels of the tank, not just from bottom to top. You can keep it open or closed, depending on the tank's needs. If you find it pulling food in, close it during feeding for example, and leave it open otherwise. BREX

Does this fit the tube for an Emporer 400?

Asked by: Audiophile
No, it does not, this is for the Penguin 350. PR11297 is the item number for the one that you need. We are currently out of stock on it, but should be back in stock soon. BREX

The mid-level and bottom strainers work great at straining out "chunks of stuff". But when I unplug the filter or remove the intake tube to clean the strainers, the chunks float away and are re-suspended in the tank water. Any suggestions?

Asked by: DG2017
Remove the stuff first, before unplugging the filter. Depending on what is attaching to the strainers, there are several ways of doing this. Algae scrubbing pads, paper towels, little wire brushes, your hand, etc. Just be sure whatever you use is aquarium and fish safe. Also, unless you have live plants, there should not be a lot of stuff getting caught, so you may want to vacuum more often or reduce feeding. BREX

I have the whole filter. What does this do? I havent changed it.

Asked by: jack324132534
It helps to pull water in from the middle of the tank, therefore increasing circulation and filtration a bit in the tank. BREX

What is the mid way strainer on a bio wheel penguin 350 used for?

Asked by: CML 2001
It allows water to be pulled in at the middle of the tank, increasing circulation. BREX

In assembly, is this part supposed to have open vents or should the vents be closed? The diagram that came in the package does not show clearly.

Asked by: Jaclyn
That is entirely up to you and your tank's needs. Open allows water to be pulled into the filter from the middle of the tank. BREX

Which side is better for the fish tank open or close?

Asked by: wise12
That depends on the style of tank, and personal preference. If you have a taller tank, rather than a longer one, we would recommend leaving it open. If the tank is more shallow, it won't make much difference, so can be left closed. Its purpose is to increase water movement at the mid-level in tall tanks, like our column and XH tanks. BREX
