Why do the Suction Cups with the LED Lights deteriorate? Does the Suction Cup "Kit" for LED lighting include both or only one suction cup?
The 21" Marineland LED light I bought about 18 months ago has worked well but the suction cups are very low quality and began failing a few months ago. The rubber in the suction cups has begun to deteriorate and because of the bubbling of the surface it will not maintain suction for more than about 10 -15 minutes. The large 36 gal tank I have this in has a center cross brace that prevents mounting the light to the edge of the rear rim of the tank so the suction cups are the only option. Unless you have another mounting option that would somehow use the rim but offset enough to bypass the cross-brace, having to replace the suction cups about every year makes your lights inappropriate for these tanks.
Marineland should either provide better quality rubber suction cups, more of them so they can be replaced easily or an optional mounting scheme for tanks without adequate rim length for mounting;
I also have a Marineland C360 pump/filter where the rubber gaskets may have a similar problem of deterioration because I have recently begun to have a slow air leak into the pump that cavitates the pump. When I turned it off last weekend overnight to cut the stress on the pump, I awoke the next morning to a large stream across my kitchen floor. Luckily the floor was tile and turning the pump on eliminated the leak until I received replacement gaskets.
There must be better quality rubber gaskets and suction cups that will last more than 12-15 months. I expect that Marineland would want to have such better quality components to maintain their reputation.
12-18 months is pretty standard for o rings in this hobby. However, if you have hard water or are using these items in a salt water tank, such water will wear on rubber parts more frequently. The kit you inquired about would come with two suction cups.
