Quiet freshwater and saltwater powerheads ideal for creating less noise in your tank.

Penguin® Power Heads deliver constant flow with fully adjustable aeration and increased surface agitation...and they remain silent at all times. The custom air valve regulates air flow, the air filter eliminates noise and dust, and the intake strainer keeps debris from fouling the impeller... that's efficiency!

Would a 660 be to powerful for a 30-gallon tank?

Asked by: SoniaW
That will depend on the type of fish, and whether you mean a 29 gallon or a true 30 gallon which is 36 inches long but only 16" high. BREX

I have cleaned my power head inside and out but it’s difficult to get the areation out.  No problem with the other one. I cleaned propeller and housing , air tube  , but I have to power on and lift unit towards top of tank to get the areation going again.

Asked by: Ronbar
Make sure the unit is no more than 2" below the surface of the water. BREX

I have a 40 gallon tank with under gravel filter and two power heads. The power heads have started expelling shots of air rather than a constant flow with a swish sound.   I Have also noticed more debris than usual on the bottom and floating in aquarium.

Asked by: alecia123
Well, first, we recommend you take the powerheads apart and thoroughly clean them. Remove the impeller in particular, and clean it, and inside the motor. Also clean out the venturi and the tubing. Last, how long has the undergravel been installed? They lost their popularity by 2000 or so because you have to take the tank down once a year to remove the UGF and clean out the bottom of the tank. If you haven't done this in the past year, it is way overdue, and may be the issue. BREX

I have a Marineland ML90609 tank. The pump is failing. What is the model/manufacturer for that pump, please?

Asked by: JBart
Pumps either totally die or they don't die at all. There is no "failing" where they seem to be getting weaker. If the flow is reduced or they are turning on and off, they typically need maintenance. Pull the front cover off, take out the impeller and clean it, as well as inside the pump extremely well with white vinegar and hot water. If the pump does totally die, call 1-800-322-1266. We do not sell it separately at this time, but will replace it under warranty. BREX

What size powerhead do I want for a 10 gallon fist tank?

Asked by: kat087600
Any of them will probably be too big, but we would recommend trying the 550, which is the smallest. That one has a flow rate of 145 gph which is the rate of flow for up to a 30 gallon tank. BREX

Do you have these powerheads in sizes for nano marine tanks

Asked by: markssaltlife
The smallest one we make is the 400 so no, there isn't anything quite small enough for a nano tank. BREX

I know this is an old posting, But - I would use the Penguin 550 for your Angels Maxxim. I have 2 tanks of Discus Fish, and Angles are much like Discus Fish and like slow moving current.

Asked by: Samy20
Thank you for your interest in this Marineland product! That would depend on what type of livestock you intend to keep, and what purpose your power head will be serving. If you want additional air, the Penguin 1140 would be a good choice, and we would recommend two of them. If you want more current or movement, the Maxi Jet 1200 would be our recommendation, and again, two of them at least. BREX

It keeps stoping how do I fix it

Asked by: Tailsian
Make sure you do not have anything interfering with the impeller by removing the powerhead, opening it, and pulling out the impeller for inspection. Clean out any sand, debris, sludge, algae, hard water deposits, etc. Use hot water and vinegar to clean the impeller, and swab out the inside of the powerhead. This should prevent any more issues, but if you have sand as your substrate, make sure the powerhead is at the top of the tank or put some floss inside the little strainer to keep sand out. BREX

I need to replace the filter assembly in my Marineland Silhouette Glass Aquarium Kit 3 gallons

Asked by: janjuaryshan
Typically, this should last a few years. If it has stopped operating, be sure to remove the bottom cover, in order to pull out the impeller and clean it. ML90624 is the item number for the pump/filter assembly. You may need to special order it through your local fish store, if cleaning does not resolve the issue. If you are under warranty, please call 1-800-322-1266. BREX

Snubber circuit to protect relay controlling 550 and 660 powerhead

I am constructing a digital timer to control 550 and 660 powerheads. I want to connect a snubber circuit across the relay contacts to protect them from the inductive spike triggered by the pump motor upon turn-off. Can you recommend resistor & capacitor component values for this job, or alternatively propose a ready-made snubber device. Failing that, I need the resistance and inductance of the 550 and 660 powerhead motors. Thank you.
Asked by: julianop
From our engineer: I do not have any suggestion for the values needed for a RC snubber. The DC resistance for both motors is about 170 ohm. The motor inductance is unknown. My suggestion to the customer would be to pick nominal RC values and try to witness the contact in a dark room. That is assuming that the case of the relay has the contacts visible. The value of the RC components can then be altered to minimize the apparent spark on opening. Otherwise try an electronic relay or our Wave maker power strip. BREX

Penguin aquarium powerheads

I am interested in getting a penguin powerhead. Which one would be the best for a 75 gallon aquarium. Can the flow be adjusted? Thank you.
Asked by: bulldog51
That depends on what you wish to do with it, but most likely the Penguin 1140 would be the best one if you wish to circulate water from one end of the tank to the other. BREX

Penquin 1140

On your website, you show a picture of the Penquin 1140 along with the 550, 660 and 550R. But when I go to order, the only options are the 550 or 660. Do you no longer make the 1140, and if not, why is it still on your website?

We do make the 1140. If it is not an option currently, then it is out of stock at the moment. As of next week, however, we will no longer be selling anything other than parts and media on the site. BREX
