Marineland’s newest kits are available in either three or five gallon glass aquarium sizes.  All kits feature Marineland 3-stage hidden filtration with a Rite-SizeTM Z Cartridge and Marineland Bio-Foam® (included in the kit), and include an adjustable flow filter pump.  Bright white and blue energy efficient LED lights feature a 3-way switch (toggle between white and blue, off, and blue-only settings).  The white LEDs create a shimmering light in the water that mimics the underwater effect of sunlight, and the blue LEDs produce a relaxing moonlight glow.  The kits feature either a hinged or sliding glass canopy for easy feeding and water care dosing.  These easy-to-assemble kits are beautifully designed and easy to maintain.

We are a new fish family, and have the Portrait 5 gallon (mazel tov, we have two guppies and a small snail!).  I am wondering if there is a recommended vacuum to use to clean the habitat, as this tank is a rather unique shape and we are new to it :)

I bought the portrait tank (ML 906) for my son. The overhead lamp arrived slightly warped. Over the last month or two it's been obviously off kilter. How do I get a replacement for this?

That depends on what you mean by a saltwater tank. Yes, it can certainly be used for a marine nano tank, but you will need to upgrade the lighting as it is not appropriate for corals or anemones. Also, it is so small that very few fish species would work well in it. BREX

Hi, I have a Marineland 5 Gallon Portrait tank kit a little less than two years old and the pump impeller froze up on the filter pump. Is there anyway to maybe get a replacement for it? Thank you, Ron Shadwell

Typically, when it freezes, it is due to hard water deposits. Try pouring white distilled vinegar into the area with the impeller and let it soak for 15 minutes. If the impeller comes out, and the motor is not damaged, use a q tip to finish cleaning the pump and the impeller. If you need further help, call 1-800-322-1266. BREX

No, it is not sufficient for corals at all. You would need to purchase a coral/reef light. The lights are only for regular illumination and are only around 6000 Kelvin. BREX

I have a 5 gallon Contour and the LED light strip is now malfunctioning. As a result my plants are dying. Can Marineland supply a replacement light? With such a small tank, most of the aquarium lights available are too large.

About filter replacement every 4 weeks in my Marineland ML90609 5-Gallon. I've been advised by multiple aquarium enthusiasts that this is NOT a good idea as it removes all the healthy bacteria I built up? So what do I do? Replace or clean it?

You always replace cartridges once a month, regardless of brand or filter. The bacteria does not grow only on the cartridge. It is throughout the tank, on the gravel, decor, other filter media, glass, etc. You do not throw out all of your biological filter. With this filter you also have a sponge or foam pad which is your main biological filter media. BREX

It's pretty small, Vitorio. It can make a good nano tank for live rock, shrimp, and maybe one very small fish. You would need to do some upgrading on the light to have live rock though. BREX

I just bought the contour 3 gallon and the water intake "flower" is about a 1/2 inch from the bottom of the aquarium. Can this be partially covered with gravel or does it need to be completely clear?

It should be free and clear. You only need about 1-2 inches of gravel. Deep gravel makes maintenance much more difficult. BREX

I'm considering buying the portrait 5-gallon tank. I'm just wondering if it actually holds 5 gallons of water. Maybe a silly question, but my current 2.5 gallon actually hold closer to 2 gallons.

The tanks hold the amount of water they are advertised to hold, so yes, it can hold 5 gallons of water. Once you add gravel and decor, etc., however, this displaces some water. So your 2.5 gallon holds 2 gallons only, because of the gravel, etc. BREX

I just bought two of the 3 gallon contour, and I love them! But I noticed that one of them seems to have a defective pump. The dial to lower the flow isn't doing a thing, and no matter what I put it on its a very low flow that barely moves the water.

I have the Conture 3 gallon tank and want to know if the waterflow should always be kept at max or should it be reduced. I have set up at max as instructed in set up instructions but not sure if this needs to be adjusted at some point. Thanks

Generally you keep it at max, unless you have fry or fish that are not strong swimmers, such as black moors or bubble eyed goldfish. BREX

I bought the 5 gallon and Iv planted some basic freshwater plants like Amazon sword And I'm having a very hard time Is it becouse the lighting is not strong enough?

The first month, leaves will die off of aquatic plants, but the roots are fine. It can take 2-3 months to establish live plants in a tank. Also, make sure you are using tablets for the roots or a liquid plant fertilizer to help them grow. The lighting that is included is suitable for low to moderate light plants, and if you have regular Amazon Sword, they should be fine. BREX

I have the 5g portrait:  Am I supposed to leave the blue light on all night and the other light on during the day?

No, you should have light on for about 10 hours a day. You can leave the blue light on for a couple of extra hours in the evening so you can view the fish if you wish, but leaving it on all night, all the time, will cause algae in the tank. BREX
