I just bought a Portrait 5 gallon, and it seems very turbulent for my beta. I've turned the pump down all the way, but it doesn't seem to have reduced the water flow back into the tank.what else can I do?

Asked by: Flyntiggr
Thank you for your inquiry. You might need to raise the water level in the tank so that the water that is coming out of the diffuser is not punding the water surface in the tank. This will make the water flow rate a little calmer as it is being release into your system. We have several of these with Betas in them here at the office with no issue. MINI

DIfference between Portrait and Contour 5?

It looks like both aquariums are available in a 5 gallon unit. I'd like to use one for a saltwater tank. I haven't seen any real differences, but by the name I would assume the contour is bowed somewhat. Is there a difference in the components included with each kit (one better than another for saltwater) or is it just the tank is physically different? Thanks!
Asked by: scoobasteve
Actually, neither. The only difference is in the light style. The Portrait has a wider light that slants down in the front. The Contour has a much more narrow strip of a light. Although the shapes of the lights look much different, the leds are the same, 9 whites, 6 blues, Kelvin rating at 6000. Both are good tanks for low to moderate live plants, but while fine for saltwater tanks, not suitable for corals. Fish only or you could probably also add live rock. BREX

Pump cord

Hi Does the pump power cord route through the black back tank (in the water)?
Asked by: Betty2528
It routes up over the back left corner of the tank (if you are facing the front of the tank). There is a slot it slides over. BREX

what color are the white leds, kelvin

Asked by: kumba63
The kelvin rating on these lights is 6000K. They seem to grow both low and moderate light plants pretty well. They are not suitable for marine corals, etc. BREX

will the pump on the portrait 5g handle saltwater

Asked by: kumba63
Yes, you can use the Portrait for a salt water system. Just keep in mind the light is not appropriate for corals, etc. The pump will simply need cleaning more often like any other equipment used in marine water. BREX

Have the Silhouette 3 - any way to adjust intake of filter?

Our one betta keeps getting stuck against the intake holes for the filter; the suction is too strong and the betta is too young/small to be strong enough to keep themselves away from it. Right now we've unplugged the filter to avoid our betta getting hurt, but long term this is not a good option and defeats the purpose of having a filter in the first place. Is there a way to lessen the intake suction power for the filter, what would you recommend? thanks in advance.
Asked by: bettaQueen
Yes, there is a flow regulator on the pump itself. You will need to unplug it, pull it out, and move the slide towards the little marks. Minimum flow on this filter is 35 gph, maximum flow is 75 gph. Additionally, put a cluster of plants in front of the filter intake to help break up the flow. BREX

How do I adjust the flow of water coming out?

Just purchased a Marineland Silhouette 3 gallon for our new betta. There seems to be a lot of current for the fish. I can't figure out how to adjust the flow of water coming out of the pump. Read instructions multiple times, tried Googling- can't find an answer/how to. Please help.
Asked by: bettaQueen
On the pump itself is a little slide that you can move to decrease the flow rate. There are marks on this slide. In one direction they get smaller, for less air flow, in the other direction, they get larger, for more air flow. You will need to pull the pump out of the chamber in order to adjust the flow rate. Is an air pump required for a Contour 5 Gallon Tank

I have 4 small fan tailed guppies. I actually have an air pump now but would like to get rid of it because the tank is on my desk and I want to get rid of the air pump noise. If I don't need an air pump should I set the pump discharge to make more turbulence on the surface to get more air in to the water? By the way, I have had this tank system for a year and absolutely love it! I am in a home office with no windows and it sure does relieve the boredom!
Asked by: Frosty
No, it is not required, and yes, we would recommend adjusting the pump for more agitation and more filtration. Glad to hear you love it! I may be biased, but I do think they make excellent desktop tanks. BREX

Stand for the Contour 5 Gallon

Hi there! I recently purchased my second contour 5 gallon, but later realized the laminate book shelf I have it on is really not as sturdy as I'd like it to be. Do you have a stand that you recommend for this tank? I love them, if I had more room, I'd have more (or a bigger Marineland tank!)
Asked by: HobbitFish
Unfortunately, no, these small tanks are considered desktop tanks or kitchen counter tanks, as the case may be. Therefore, we do not have stands for them. BREX

Filter running slowly, clogged way down out of to clear?

The water from the 3 gal Silouette filter pump is only trickling out now. Tank is about 1 1/4 yrs in use but only recently clogged badly. I have cleared what i can reach with a tube brush but obviously am not getting down to the clog. How can i clear it out?
Asked by: nhbos
You need to open up the pump, pull out the impeller and clean it by soaking the impeller in distilled white vinegar. Use a q tip with vinegar to clean out the tiny reservoir the impeller resides in. BREX

Not a dumb question at all, actually, it is relatively common. Yes, it can get wet, but you still need a "drip loop" so water will not trickle down it to the outlet. BREX

where do i place the biofoam

I just bought the marineland 5 gallon contour and dont know where the biofoam is to be placed or facing.. i see the intake with the holes on the bottom right side and dont know if the biofoam has to be facing towards the front of the tank or the back facing the black part of the tank. It looks like there is only one way to put it in but not sure. really confused on such a simple matter.Im looking at it now and the blue cartridge is facing the front and the biofoam is behind it on the bottom facing the back of the tank. Have it running now for three days and using fluval Cycle to boost the tank. Have no fish in there yet. Have decided to wait. have a Aqueon 10 watt heater in there also..But my main concern is the facing and placing of the biofoam. Thank You

I'm sorry to hear this. Have you opened it, removed the impeller and cleaned both it and the motor? Most likely, this is all that it needs. Please call or email us directly for further assistance. BREX

what size and brand pump fits the 5 gal marineland aquarium

I have seen frquent suggestions for a bit stronger pump, especially if I try a few fish. Also have been told I should use the smaller than 50 watt heater. Please advise, Thanks, Cindy
Asked by: eileen48
Hello Cindy, The pump that comes with it is ML90625. There is no need for a larger pump in this system. You need to keep the water levels properly balanced between the front and the back of the tank. We recommend a 10-25 watt heater. BREX

You can purchase the replacement cartridges on Just type in the search box (at the top right hand corner of the webpage): Rite Size Z, and the cartridges will become availble. They will be listed as the Eclipse cartridges, but they are universal for the smaller kits as well. MINI

I have a 5 gallon portrait tank. I've had to replace the filter every 5 to 7 days. The water is crystal clear thanks to a UV sterilizer that works very well. There are only 2 goldfish about 3 inches in length. I turn the pump off while feeding and do not turn it back on until all the food is consumed so the pump wouldn't suck in the floating food. A brown film is what appears to collect on the filter and eventually clog it causing the water in the pump chamber to fall at levels nearly below the pump which could cause a pump to burn out. Any suggestions?
Asked by: Kruebbe
Goldfish require 3 gallons of water, minimum per inch. You have two goldfish that require at least 9 gallons each in 5 gallons of water, so there is a lot of waste being produced and the filter is handling it but clogging quickly. If you wish to continue keeping them in this tank, make sure you vacuum the tank weekly and replace 1/4 of the water each time with new water. Otherwise, I would recommend a minimum of a 20-30 gallon aquarium as the goldfish will continue to grow to a size of 6-12 inches, depending on the species. BREX

What about algae build up

I have a magnetic algae remover, and a brush. So I don't scratch the glass, which do you suggest? I do have an algae eater species in the tank. This is a fresh water tank.
Asked by: motourpro
If you have one of the kits in the link, they are made from glass and won't scratch unless you accidentally pick up gravel with the magnetic remover. I'm not sure what type of brush you have so don't know how to respond to that portion. I use an algae pad, which is stiff, but not very abrasive, again, as long as you don't pick up any gravel. BREX

Contour 5 gal pump flow?

I'm curious how many gph the pump puts out on the max setting and minimum setting, more so I'd like to know the max setting gph because I want to make the tank a pico reef and need good flow. This would make my decision to purchase a new pump or keep the stock one much easier, thanks.
Asked by: Pgoy
The maximum flow is 80 gph. Minimum would be 35 gph. BREX

Is the filter cover necessary?

I have the 5 gallon portrait aquarium, and the filter cover doesn't sit right on top of the aquarium, I need to remove it everytime I want to slide the cover back as it will get in the way. Is it necessary to use the cover?
Asked by: astamm
It will reduce evaporation, and keep unwanted stuff out of the filter chamber, but otherwise, no, it is not absolutely necessary. Sounds like you do not have it installed correctly. Make sure your heater cord is not interfering with it. BREX

No, we do not offer different types of lighting for the small desktop kits. They already offer a fair amount of light and are suitable for low to moderate light plants, like your Amazon sword. BREX
