1968 – Robert Sherman, a Cleveland businessman and manufacturer of lobster tanks for restaurants, takes over Aquarium Stock Company, a Los Angeles-based retailer.

1969 – Robert Sherman incorporates his business as Aquaria, Inc.

1970 – Aquaria, Inc. affiliates with Marineland of the Pacific, a Palos Verdes, California oceanarium, and begins developing a line of products under the Marineland Aquarium Products brand. Eventually, Marineland of the Pacific and Marineland Aquarium Products would split, with each retaining the Marineland name.

1980 – Marineland launches the Magnum® canister filter at the pet industry’s APPMA trade show.

1990 – Marineland Labs created. Later that year, Marineland incorporates the revolutionary BIO-Wheel technology in its Penguin® filters, which are launched at the APPMA trade show.

1992 – The Hang-on-Tank (H.O.T.) Magnum filter is introduced.

1994 – Emperor Filter Systems, which feature as much as twice the filter cartridge capacity, are introduced.

1995 – Marineland brings its BIO-Wheel technology to a line of products designed just for consumers. The Eclipse Integrated Aquarium Systems become one of the company’s most successful products.

1996 – Marineland Retailer Systems (MaRS) forms and is introduced at the APPMA trade show.

1997 – Marineland acquires Ark-La-Tex and sets up its Midwest and East Coast manufacturing operations at the Louisiana-based facility. The company also acquires Aquarium Systems, Inc., the maker of Instant Ocean® synthetic sea salt, and Jungle Talk, America’s number-one seller of bird toys and accessories.

1998 – TA Associates, a private equity firm, acquires Marineland. TA Associates also owns United Pet Group, a leading marketer of premium pet brands. Eight in One (pet products and supplies) and Marineland become anchor brands for United Pet Group.

1999 – Marineland acquires aquarium manufacturer Perfecto Manufacturing of Noblesville, Indiana.

2002 – BIO-Spira product introduced at APPMA Chicago.

2003 – Marineland introduces the Stealth™ Shatterproof Heater, which distributes core heat evenly and efficiently, yet remains inconspicuous.

2004 – Spectrum Brands announces plan to acquire United Pet Group.

2005 – Marineland officially becomes part of the Spectrum Brands family and moves its headquarters from Moorpark, California, to Blacksburg, Virginia.
